What’s us‑east‑1?
It’s the name of Amazon Web Services’ oldest and biggest cloud region: rooms full of servers in northern Virginia that a huge share of the internet’s apps and websites run on.
When us-east-1 has a bad day, apps everywhere go down with it, and the engineers who keep them running have a very long night. Every engineer knows the name. Wearing it is a bit like wearing a jersey for a team that keeps losing in the most spectacular way possible.
